More On David Scott Peters... SMART Systems-Simple, Measurable, Applicable, Repeatable and Trainable-is a term Mr. Peters coined, having refined dozens of systems over the years, devoting his professional life to the specialized issues facing franchise owners. Concurrently, he understands the needs of the independent operator. He grew up in his family's successful restaurant and catering business in Linwood, N.J. Today, through Smile Button Enterprises, Mr. Peters trains independent restaurant professionals on the same business practices that make franchise operations strong-training, solid financial controls and SMART systems. He does this through continual development of restaurant operations training materials delivered in various formats, including print, online, audio, motivational workshops and coaching sessions. Also critical to the success of his clients is Peters' relationships with restaurant industry professionals, vendors and manufactures who share his vision to train and inspire. From 1997 to present, Mr. Peters served in ascending, executive-level roles for Famous Sam's, Inc., a restaurant/sports bar chain with system-wide annual revenues in excess of $30 million. As Chief Operating Officer, he is credited with skillfully managing the turnaround for the chain, which comprises 30 locations throughout Arizona. In his first year as COO, he improved cash flow by 20 percent; by his fourth year, he retired more than $1.2 million in debt. Prior to his role as COO, Mr. Peters served as Director of Operations. His development of accelerated training programs for new franchise owners significantly improved their first-year operations. Mr. Peters also served as an independent consultant to Famous Sam's and three franchise units, providing operational support, financial analysis and management training. Prior to Famous Sam's, Mr. Peters was an Academics Instructor for the Scottsdale Culinary Institute. There, he upgraded the curriculum and introduced projects which improved management practices in the industry. Mr. Peters earned multiple promotions to Operations Manager at Coyote Spring Brewing Company & Café in Phoenix. There, he oversaw daily operations of two locations with combined annual sales of $3.5 million, as well as 10 managers and more than 110 line-employees. While at Coyote Springs, Mr. Peters upgraded Human Resources, which included the development of hiring systems and standards. Also, he led the first team-development and team-supported business plans and Management by Objectives (MBOs) in the company's history. Prior to Coyote Springs, Mr. Peters served as Director of Franchise Development for Service Center, Inc., a company that provided marketing and dispatch services to independent contractors. There, he contributed to the Scottsdale-based company's first year growth of 800 percent through the sale of new and existing franchise businesses. Mr. Peters earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Communications, Interpersonal/Organizational from Northeastern University in 1989. He resides in Peoria, Arizona, with his wife Susan and their two children.
