Wine Discoveries...Spain By Leo B. Fox
Try Tempranillo, Spain's Noble Grape...
Is it Quintessential, Ubiquitous or Indigenous?
The answer is that all three words perfectly describe Tempranillo, a remarkable Spanish grape variety. It is
Quintessential; having exceptional quality, Ubiquitous, being present in most Spanish Wine Regions, and Indigenous because it originates on the Iberian Peninsula. Jancis Robinson calls it "Spain's answer to Cabernet Sauvignon" while John Radford says that it is "a possible common ancestor with Pinot Noir." On the contrary, I find that Tempranillo has some similarity to the Sangiovese of Italy in terms of color, taste profile and the broad extent to which it is planted.
