Jancis Robinson, "Woman of the Year" by Phillip Silverstone
Jancis Robinson is one of the brightest stars in the wine world's firmament. She's written some of the most important books on the subject, her columns have appeared in The Wine Spectator, and The Financial Times and she constantly appears on British television producing and hosting very inspired wine documentaries. Her most recent book "Confessions Of A Wine Lover" (called "Tasting Pleasure" in the U.S.) is a splendid autobiographical saunter through Jancis' wine world (or is that Jancii? Her greatest undertaking was the 1100 page "Oxford Companion to Wine", the most definitive guide to the subject ever written. The Companion is being updated before Y2K. Oh, yes, she's also a Master of Wine. I was delighted that the March, 1999 edition of Britain's highly respected Decanter Magazine nominated Jancis as it's "Woman Of The Year". Well deserved indeed! Not too long ago we met in her home in London on one of those rare occasions - an absolutely gorgeous afternoon, and not a drop of rain in sight. Mind you, Jancis is so bright and upbeat that even if it had rained, I wouldn't have noticed.
