An Interview with Hugh Johnson by Phillip Silverstone
British wine author Hugh Johnson frequently pops across the pond and finds time to chin wag with your intrepid wine geezer in cyberspace. We met recently in New York. The two mega successes of Hugh's amazing career are The World Atlas of Wine (now in its fourth edition) which is celebrating its quarter century, and the annually updated Pocket Encyclopedia of Wine, the definititive reference book, now in its second decade. To quote wine author Jancis Robinson: "Hugh's writing has been characterized by his sensual enthusiasm for wine." In Hugh Johnson's book called WINE, a book which remains my absolute favorite, the author makes the following observation: "Wine is the pleasantest subject in the world to discuss. All its associations are with occasions when people are at their best; with relaxation, contentments, leisurely meals and the free flow of ideas.
